"A very happy college graduate hoists her diploma high in the air"According to cosmetic plastic surgeons across the nation summing up June’s top graduation gifts, the leading present was rhinoplasty surgery.

Moreover, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), the leading plastic surgery gift for male high school, junior college and university grads was also rhinoplasty. (Continued below.)

"A lovely face on a young person is enhanced by removing a large nasal bump"

(Continued.) According to ASPS 2011 statistics, 33,892 patients between the ages of 13 and 19 had nose reshaping. That number accounts for 14 percent of all 2011 rhinoplasty surgeries.

Both the graduate and family must go through some screening. TV plastic surgery shows gave the wrong impression: a person appears on the screen with an unattractive facial feature and then, presto! 20 minutes later, the flaw is gone.

But first, serious research is needed to choose the best cosmetic surgeon; parents and grads must take a closed-eyed look at seasonal fun in the sun already on tap – like summer camps, sports and summer school – to find time for healing and recovery.

For instance, teens need four weeks off sports after rhinoplasty. A basketball to the face is enough to undo the careful craft of a master surgeon.

Parents and grads should see at least several board-certified plastic surgeons well versed in doing the type of cosmetic surgery the grad wants.

A surgeon wants to see that the grad desires surgery for him or herself, that the young patient understands what happens before and after surgery and that he is mature enough for a permanent change in a major – if not THE – prominent facial feature.

To be sure check that the surgeon has at least hundreds of before and after pictures of other young peoples’ rhinoplasty procedures.

Yet another bonus: some nose reshaping patients find for the first time they have breathing blockages which can be resolved during a rhinoplasty. Some nose job cases require septoplasty or turbinate reduction surgery.

Parents and surgeons can also emphasize the grad’s plastic surgery is not an exercise in vanity but a way to deal with an embarrassing body feature like an overly large or hooked nose.

The healed result builds new self-esteem and confidence for a young person moving on to new level. High school students frequently have a nose job before starting college where they can stand a little taller, speak with a bit more confidence and sit closer to the front in class while being more social and outgoing overall.

Renewed self-confidence is also rewarding for college grads!
