With increasing frequency, loved ones are opening Christmas gifts and finding coupons for Botox, Juvederm or some other favored cosmetic treatment.
But when it comes to giving larger cosmetic or plastic surgery gifts, caution is the watchword. The gift can blow up in your face like one man who noticed his wife complaining a lot about her lower eyelids which seemed to be creating bags under her eyes.
So the thoughtful husband rushed to the office of a local plastic surgeon, paid for a lower lid eyelift and duly wrapped the gift.
Come Christmas morning, the husband gave his wife the gift, expecting joy and clapping hands. Instead, she burst out crying, saying, “You must think I’m so ugly I need a plastic surgeon!”
Actually, the wife just wanted to talk about aging. Like many guys, the husband wanted to fix a perceived problem.
It’s not so far fetched. One English maker of facial fillers queried their customer base asking if they would be offended if they were given plastic surgery as a surprise gifts. Half said yes.
If the giftee has said he or she would like an eye lift (or rhinoplasty or a face lift) some day, events might have taken a different outcome. The best route of all: before paying for plastic surgery, ask long in advance if that is a gift that would be welcomed.
Giving cosmetic plastic surgery as a surprise gift is not wise because it may not be possible for the person to have surgery. Or, the desired changes are not possible or safe.
Suppose a pleased wife comes in with a Christmas gift coupon providing a rhinoplasty? But upon further examination, the surgeon finds she has a deviated septum? Or needs too have turbinate reduction surgery to provide clear, healthy breathing? Does the gift giver then have to pony up for the additional procedures?
Those questions are best answered in consultation with the plastic surgeon doing the surgery.
You’re in the clear if the object of your affection has been actively seeking or researching plastic surgery procedures to have, say, a nose job or a neck sculpture.
Perhaps the best gift of all would be paying for a before-surgery consultation with a plastic surgeon, going with the giftee and taking it from there.
