Good Breathing

A good way to get unfiltered, unbiased views on just about anything is to take a glance at a consumer-written bulletin board that carries comments about the subject.

Same with nasal surgery patients, many of whom now breathe better.

One such bulletin board is Cpaptalk.com. People wearing CPAP (continuous, positive air pressure) masks to force air into their lungs because – usually – their noses have blockages.

A section of Cpaptalk.com is devoted to patients writing about:

  • Septoplasty, the procedure that repairs a bent, or deviated septum
  • Turbinate Reduction Surgery, the nasal surgery that reduces the size of turbinates — structures in the upper nose — to promote more healthy breathing as well as providing far less snoring and sleep apnea. (Continued below)

For the patient below, an old sports injury to his nose also retarded his breathing. But rhinoplasty and a raised tip improved his appearance while restoring normal breathing. (Robert Kotler M.D. photo)

(Continued from above.) Loud snoring usually caused these writers to take up the CPAP mask. They also found other things at work, including:

  • Bent septums
  • Turbinates that swell

Wrote scooter 133 on Cpaptalk.com: “He (his doctor) said I have a deviated septum… His next suggestion was Septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery…has anyone here had it done?”

Responded macew: “I was blocked 70 % on the right and about 30% on the left…I decided to have septoplasty and turbinate reduction…For me, it was a pretty easy surgery and I’m in my early 70s…I breathe a lot better and am glad I did it.”

Says SleepGuy: “After many years of putting it off, I had septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery last month – I can’t believe what a difference that has made after even a week. And it keeps getting better.”

Don V., one of our patients wrote to us about his nasal and cosmetic nose surgery: “I’ve just passed the 6 month mark since my nasal surgery and I wanted to tell you how happy I am with the results… I do have one regret, I should have done this years ago!

S.S. of Los Angeles penned: “Dr. Kotler performed cosmetic and internal surgery to correct my breathing… I was able to breathe immediately after the procedure through the new tube system…” (By “tube,” he means the Kotler Nasal Airway.)

J.M., after two botched surgeries done elsewhere: I can breathe so well I don’t ever remember breathing this way before!”
